Visit Portesham

"Jurassic Dorset" is one of the top 10 British drives that The Telegraph invites you to tackle in your lifetime. Whilst on the exceptionally scenic B3157 you will discover the historic village of Portesham, renowned for its links to Captain Thomas Hardy who affectionately referred to it as Possum.

The area around this pretty village is rich in prehistoric remains with several Neolithic and Bronze Age barrows and was granted as a manor by Canute, the Danish King of England, Denmark and Norway, in 1023 and given to his servant and bodyguard, Orc.

There have been a few changes since the village's inception 997 years ago...

...Is that Millennium party talk we hear?!
